Quick answer: No. You cannot deduct lottery tickets. You buy a ticket to win a prize. It is not a gift to charity.
Why tickets are not deductible
Tax deductions need a voluntary gift. You give money to a deductible gift recipient (DGR). You must get nothing back in return.
A lottery ticket is a product you buy. You get entries and bonus coupons. The ATO sees this as a purchase, not a donation.
This applies to all operators. RSL Queensland, yourtown, Mater, Endeavour, and Deaf Lottery all work the same way. The charity's mission does not change the tax rules.
Donations vs ticket purchases
Many operator sites have two separate options:
- Ticket checkout — not deductible.
- Direct donation pages — may be deductible if the entity is a DGR and you get no ticket entries.
Do not assume "supporting charity" marketing means you get a tax deduction.
Can businesses deduct tickets?
Generally no. A business cannot deduct tickets as a donation.
Marketing or sponsorship deals are different. But a standard ticket purchase is still not deductible.
What winners should know after the win
Winning is not income. See our CGT guide for details.
Ownership costs are usually not deductible. They are only deductible if you rent the property for income.
