An art union is a lottery run to raise money for a charity or community group under a state or territory licence. The name dates from 19th-century lotteries whose prizes were artworks.
Today the term covers most Australian charity lotteries, including prize home draws. The organisation running it must hold a permit or licence from the gaming regulator in its state or territory, and the permit sets rules such as how many tickets can be sold and how the draw is conducted.
Because the licence belongs to one state or territory, some art unions only sell tickets to residents of certain states. Each operator's terms and conditions say who can enter.
